GIN - O' CLOCK

Isn't it lovely to pretend you're rich and sit and sip cocktails all day from fancy bars? Ahhh, the high life! There's so many lovely cocktail bars in Newcastle that last weekend it was just too hard to resist. And we quickly realised that once we started, it was a great struggle to stop! But as a little one-off treat, cocktail-bar-hopping isn't a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Newcastle has so much to offer in terms of restaurants, bars and entertainment, and that's the main reason I chose to stay in this lovely city after my 3 years of University finished. Daniel Footwear have recently constructed a brilliant little list of all the best places in Newcastle on their blog - and I would definitely say that they've hit the nail on the head with their must-visit locations! If you're new to the area, or you're considering a weekend visit, I'd definitely recommend checking out their 24 Hours In Newcastle post to plan your visit.

One of my personal favourites from their list is The Botanist . In just a short space of time this place has gone from being totally unheard of, to being one of the busiest and coolest places in the toon. So, obviously, this was mine and Sam's first stop on our cocktail fuelled Saturday afternoon. Having visited the Botanist around 4 times before, I knew exactly what I was ordering before even stepping through the door. My personal favourite and probably one of the nicest cocktails I've ever had is the Strawberry and Cucumber Breeze. Filled with fresh cucumber, mint, Beefeater Gin, apple juice, vanilla syrup, cranberry juice, strawberry liqueur, lemon juice and strawberry purée - it's just fab. Simple as. Gin is always my drink of choice - so any gin lovers, this ones for you! Sam opted for an Espresso Martini - a drink that's not actually on the menu (difficult men!), but the Botanist staff were more than happy to make one regardless. On this occasion, we didn't eat, but having dined their before I would undoubtedly recommend the famous Hanging Kebabs - they are soooo good! But make sure you book a table in advance if you don't want to wait - The Botanist is rammed full to capacity all day, every day!

The next place we decided to visit was one neither of us had ventured to before. In fact - I hadn't actually heard of it before until I moved house last month and began to see the building every day on my journey to work. The pretty exterior prompted a quick Google search of the name I saw in big lights - Bealim House. I was absolutely thrilled to find out it was actually a restaurant, bar AND Gin Distillery!!! Ahh, Gin sweet Gin... So, of course I was eager to visit.
We arrived later on Saturday afternoon and were surprised at how quiet the place was, especially having just come from the hustle and bustle of The Botanist just 5 minutes down the road. But it was actually quite a welcome change. I absolutely loved the interior décor of this place - it was half industrialised with brick walls, copper wired lights, and the huge gin distilling tanks (is that what they're called??). But then suddenly the wall changed to this beautiful mosaic style tile collage, filled with colour and patterns. As you can tell from my photographs - I was a big fan of this wall (so instagramable). Drink-wise I opted for the 'Summertime', a [obviously] gin based cocktail, filled with fresh strawberries, strawberry liqueur & Fentiman's herbal tonic water (can you begin to see my taste in cocktails?). I would say this drink wasn't as nicely presented as the one from The Botnaist, but it was definitely equally as delicious, yet in a different way. Adventurous Sam pushed the boat out and ordered another Espresso Martini - which he said wasn't as good, but I did say he should have ordered something Gin based since we were in a Gin Distillery, duh!
I really enjoyed Bealim House and would definitely return. It's a shame it's not more well-known because it really is a lovely little place that's a bit different - so go get yourself a cocktail if you're in the area!

  2. Ah you never can beat a good cocktail! I love the Botanist and I'm pretty sure it's the prettiest bar/restaurant I've ever been to with all the lights and the tree in the middle. I've never heard of Bealim House until now either, but I love the way they've decorated it and the drinks look delicious - will definitely be visiting there soon :) x
